Wrexham Supporters Trust Press Release

"Community based bid for Wrexham Football Club led by the Wrexham Supporters Trust"

Buoyed by the response of supporters and the Wrexham community to the 'Million Reasons' campaign, Wrexham Supporters Trust feel the time is right to outline further details of their Roadmap plan which will give majority ownership of the club and its assets back to the community. In response to this call for support, the WST has received indicative offers of support totalling over £200,000 for the bid to acquire Wrexham FC, the Racecourse Ground and Colliers Park.

Roadmap to creating a successful sustainable community-owned football club

  1. Acquisition of Wrexham Football Club subject to membership approval
  2. Securing the finances of the football club for the 2011/12 season
  3. Investing the WST's substantial funds for football club working capital
  4. Imminent launch of a community share scheme facilitated by Supporters Direct and Cobbetts Law
  5. Finalisation of a detailed Business Plan to manage the budget for 2011/12 following successful completion of due diligence by BDO LLP (4th largest accountancy company in the UK)
  6. Approaching local business to discuss investment
  7. 'Asset Lock' the Racecourse Ground for the future by placing it into a community interest company (CIC) in partnership with other community minded partners
  8. Aim to generate revenue through maximising the assets of Wrexham FC and leveraging the goodwill in the community to return Wrexham FC to a financially viable business
  9. Use the community based ownership model to attract investment in order to return the Racecourse to an international standard venue
  10. Give everyone who loves Wrexham FC an opportunity to be actively involved in shaping the future of our club

An open meeting has been set for Tuesday 17th May and anyone interested in the future of the Football Club is invited along to hear about the progress of the bid, and the Roadmap to achieve community ownership. During the meeting we will hear from a variety of speakers who have experience of delivering similar plans including Kevin Jaquiss of Cobbetts Law recent winner of the Financial Times innovative Lawyer of the year, FC United who have raised over £1.4 million in a community shares scheme, and Chester FC who are back on the way up after supporters took ownership and transformed the club, winning the league and tripling crowds in their first season.

Chairman of Wrexham Supporters Trust, Richard Owen said:

"This season has been full of twists and turns, like no other. Whilst we just fell short in our efforts to win promotion back to the football league, there is a chance to make a long lasting difference off the pitch and the time is right for the community to take on this challenge. I urge Wrexham fans and potential investors to turn up in numbers on Tuesday 17th May to show your support for our club."

Speaking on Wednesday 11th May at the launch of the Supporters Direct keynote report into football governance at Portcullis House (Houses of Parliament) in London Ian Lucas MP stated "I'm delighted to support the WST's bid to acquire Wrexham FC and hope that the owners take this opportunity to leave a legacy of community ownership for the people of Wrexham. I believe that this community-led bid is in the best long-term interest of Wrexham as a town."

The WST launch meeting will be held in the William Aston Hall at Glyndwr University starting at 7:30pm.
