AM and MP meet Minister over Racecourse future
CLWYD SOUTH AM, KAREN SINCLAIR, and WREXHAM MP, IAN LUCAS today met Assembly Sports Minister Alun Pugh to stress the importance of re-developing Wrexhams Racecourse football ground.
The AM and MP said discussions with the Minister about securing Assembly support for the project had been ‹Å“constructive.
In a joint statement they both expressed their hope that a viable way forward could be found for the Racecourse that maximised the economic and sporting opportunities only an international stadium can bring.
In the joint statement, KAREN SINCLAIR AM and IAN LUCAS MP said:The redevelopment of the Racecourse will allow the area to take advantage of the 2012 Olympics and other such sporting and economic opportunities that only a quality stadium can attract.
We are glad the Minister has taken the time to meet with us today to discuss the importance of the Vision 2012 document and how we can build an elite sporting venue at the Racecourse that will serve not just the community in North Wales, but the whole of the country.
We welcome the discussion of the practical issues involved and news that the Minister and the Labour Assembly Government are fully committed to this project.
However, it is now imperative that a clear and strong business case is put forward by the Local Authority so that Assembly Government funding can be secured for this project which will make the Racecourse a sporting venue of huge strategic importance to Wales.
No final decision has yet been made and it is mischief making to suggest otherwise.
The ball is clearly now in the court of the local authority who must make a robust case for the plan and this we hope to see by the end of May.
We look forward to a positive outcome to this and the redevelopment of the Racecourse.
