Dementia Awareness Week

WrexhamvDementiaAs we come to the end of Dementia Awareness Week 2017 we look back at Wrexham Football Club’s involvement.

Firstly, it was great to see so many events in and around Wrexham. This started with the club making an impression with it's fixture board on Mold Road.

The message, “Wrexham AFC V Dementia” was our statement of intent to continue working to increase awareness of this relentless and unforgiving disease, also for the Club and My Racecourse to remain a dementia friendly community.

On Wednesday, we held an event at the Centenary Club. WST Chairman, Pete Jones took fans on a trip down memory lane with his presentation on the history of the club.

One of the football club’s dementia friends’ champions, Dave Mainwaring also made a short presentation about the club and how we achieved official status for our work to become a dementia friendly community.

Supporters Direct have shown an interest in this work and requested some video footage to promote the good work that we are doing.

Disabled Supporters’ Association chairman, Steve Gilbert also gave a brief outline of the work they are carrying out to ensure that My Racecourse is accessible and inclusive all round.

Friday saw the football club invited to join other dementia friendly communities from around Wrexham and North Wales in Farndon Bridge for what may be considered a unique event.

The invite was extended to our counterparts in Cheshire with the aim to “unite against dementia” across the Wales / England border.

The football club was represented by WST board member Stuart Roberts, Dementia Reminiscence Group volunteer and dementia friends champion Dave Mainwaring, Disabled Supporters’ Association committee member Nathan Lee Davies along with club members Jim Roberts and Lin Mainwaring.

The day didn’t stop for Dave and Lin as they were due on duty at Tesco back in Wrexham manning the Dementia Friendly Wrexham information stand.

This is a typical example of the attitude and commitment of our volunteers.

Well done to all involved!
